What is happening to custom GPTs?

OpenAI says custom GPTs are scheduled to retire on 11 December 2026, and that the change affects all ChatGPT plans. It suggests moving each GPT to a ChatGPT plugin, and new GPTs can no longer be created on Free, Go, Plus or Pro accounts.

At retirement, custom GPTs and their GPT pages become inaccessible (OpenAI's retirement FAQ).
Custom actions don't carry over to plugins; they have to be rebuilt.
A migrated plugin starts private, and existing users don't get access automatically.

When is a custom GPT the wrong tool?

When the people who need it aren't in ChatGPT. A GPT lives inside ChatGPT, so your website visitors, and colleagues without an account, can't use it where they are.
