In short

To add an AI chatbot to WordPress, you either install a chatbot plugin from the WordPress plugin directory, or paste a hosted chatbot's snippet before the closing body tag, usually with a header-and-footer code plugin. ClearMakes Agents is a hosted chatbot trained on your own site and documents; it is free to start.

Plugin or snippet: which should I use?

A plugin runs inside WordPress; a snippet loads a chatbot that's hosted elsewhere. A snippet keeps your site light and works the same if you ever leave WordPress.

  • Plugin: set up from your dashboard, but it adds to your site and updates like any plugin.
  • Snippet: one line of code, the chatbot is run and updated by its maker.

Where does the snippet go in WordPress?

Just before the closing body tag, on every page. The simplest way is a plugin that adds code to your site's footer, so you never edit theme files.

  • Any theme: install a header-and-footer code plugin, paste the snippet into its footer box and save.
  • Classic themes: some have a footer scripts box in the theme settings.
  • Avoid editing footer.php directly: a theme update can erase it.

How do I train the chatbot on my WordPress content?

Give the chatbot your site's address and let it read your pages. Then add anything that isn't online, such as price lists or policies, as documents.

  • ClearMakes Agents reads up to 200 pages per website, and pulls out FAQs and tables.
  • Re-add or refresh the website after big changes to your content.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a WordPress plugin for an AI chatbot?

Not for the chatbot itself. You need a place to paste one snippet before the closing body tag; a header-and-footer code plugin is the simplest.

Will it work on WordPress.com?

On WordPress.com, scripts and plugins need a plan that allows plugins, with hosting features switched on (WordPress.com support, checked 29 September 2026). Self-hosted WordPress sites can always add a footer snippet.

Will it slow my site down?

The chat loads separately from your page and only opens when a visitor clicks it.

Does the same snippet work on Shopify, Wix or Webflow?

Yes. Any site that accepts custom code in its footer works; look for custom code, footer scripts or code injection.
