How to connect Claude to your company documents

There are four ways, from uploading files to a Project to a custom connector. Here's what each one suits, how to set it up, and where it stops working well.

You can give Claude your company documents in four ways: upload them to a Claude Project, turn on the Google Workspace connector, build your own MCP server, or paste a ready-made connector link such as the one ClearMakes Agents gives each agent. Projects and connectors work on every Claude plan; custom connectors are limited to one on Free.

Way 1: upload files to a Claude Project

Best for a handful of documents one team uses. Create a Project, add the files and instructions, and everyone in the Project can ask about them.

On every plan; Free allows up to five Projects.
Files are copies: update them by hand when the original changes.

Way 2: Claude's Google Workspace connector

Best when the documents already live in Google Drive and each person may read their own Drive. Turn the connector on, and Claude can search the files that person can already open.

Anthropic says it mirrors each person's own Google permissions.
On Team and Enterprise, an admin enables it first.
Its help page describes no way to limit it to certain folders.

Way 3: your own MCP server

Best if you have a developer and a system Claude should reach. You build and host a remote MCP server, then add its address as a custom connector.

On Team and Enterprise, only owners can add custom connectors.
You run, secure and update the server.

Way 4: a ready-made connector link

Best when you want one set of documents and Drive folders, chosen by you, readable from Claude without running a server. ClearMakes Agents gives each agent such a link.

Before you connect anything

Frequently asked questions

Which Claude plans support custom connectors?

Anthropic lists Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Free users can add one custom connector, and on Team and Enterprise only owners can add them (checked 29 September 2026).

Is a Project or a connector better?

A Project suits a few files one group uses. A connector suits documents that change or live in Drive, and documents several teams need.

Can Claude change my documents through the connector?

Not through a ClearMakes link: its tools only search and read. Other connectors may allow more, so check what each one offers.

Does this work with ChatGPT too?
