In short

OpenAI says custom GPTs retire on 11 December 2026 across all ChatGPT plans, and suggests moving them to ChatGPT plugins. Before then, save each GPT's instructions and files. Then choose: OpenAI's plugin, a Claude Project, or an agent on your own website and team, such as ClearMakes Agents, which is free to start.

What exactly is changing?

Custom GPTs are scheduled to retire on 11 December 2026, and their pages become inaccessible then. Some Enterprise workspaces with an approved deferral have until 11 February 2027.

  • New GPTs can't be created on Free, Go, Plus or Pro accounts; Business, Enterprise and Edu still can.
  • OpenAI's migration turns a GPT's instructions into a skill and its files into reference files in a plugin.
  • Custom actions, the selected model, sharing settings and past conversations don't move.

What should I save today?

Everything you'd need to rebuild the GPT anywhere. Copy it out now, while you can still open the editor.

  • The instructions, word for word.
  • Every knowledge file (keep your originals; a GPT holds up to 20).
  • The conversation starters, and five questions people really ask, with good answers, to test the new home.
  • A note of any custom actions and the APIs they call.

Option 1: move it to a ChatGPT plugin

Best if the GPT is for you or your team inside ChatGPT. When migration is available in your account, open My GPTs and choose Migrate to plugin.

  • Migration uses the latest published version; drafts don't transfer.
  • The plugin starts private, so re-share it with the people who used the GPT.

Option 2: a Claude Project

Best if your team works in Claude. Create a Project, paste the instructions and upload the files; Projects are on every Claude plan (up to five on Free).

Option 3: an agent on your website and in your team

Best if the GPT answered customers or colleagues who aren't all in ChatGPT. Rebuild it as a ClearMakes agent and put it on your site, in a share link or in your team's workspace.

  • Visitors don't need a ChatGPT account.
  • You can read every conversation.
  • On Pro and Business, the same agent can still be read from ChatGPT and Claude.

How to set it up

Move a GPT to ClearMakes Agents

  1. 1

    Create an agent

Start blank, give it your GPT's name, and paste the instructions into Behavior.

  2. 2

    Upload the files

Add the same knowledge files, and your website if the GPT used it.

  3. 3

    Test and publish

Ask your five saved questions in Test agent, then publish to your site or team.

Before 11 December: a checklist

  1. 1List every GPT you rely on, and whether you made it or someone else did.
  2. 2Copy each GPT's instructions and conversation starters into a document.
  3. 3Keep the original knowledge files together in one folder.
  4. 4Write down five real questions and the answers you expect.
  5. 5Note any custom actions and the service each one calls.
  6. 6Pick a new home for each GPT and test it with your five questions.
  7. 7Tell the people who used it where to find the new one.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

When do custom GPTs stop working?

OpenAI's retirement FAQ gives 11 December 2026. Enterprise workspaces with an approved deferral have until 11 February 2027. Check the notice in your own account for your date.

Will my conversations move with the GPT?

No. OpenAI says past GPT conversations don't move into the plugin. Save anything you need from them before the retirement date.

What happens to a GPT I use but didn't make?

Look for its notice and the creator's guidance. Using someone else's GPT doesn't let you migrate it yourself.

Can I put my GPT on my website?

Not as a GPT. Rebuild it as an agent with the same instructions and files, then paste one snippet on your site. With ClearMakes Agents that is free to start.
