In short

A chatbot trained on PDF documents answers questions from the text in your PDF files. The files are read and indexed, and each answer is built from the passages that match the question; the AI model itself isn't changed. With ClearMakes Agents you upload the PDFs, test the answers, and share the chatbot. The Free plan holds 5 documents.

Which PDFs work best?

PDFs with real text: manuals, policies, price lists and help guides. A scanned PDF may have no text the chatbot can read, so check it first.

  • Test: open the PDF and try to select a sentence. If you can't, it's a picture of text.
  • Pick the latest version of each file, and remove old ones that say something different.

Does the chatbot learn my PDFs for good?

No. Your files are indexed, not used to change the AI model. Upload a new version or remove a file, and the next answer uses the change.

How many PDFs can I add?

Free holds 5 documents per agent (10 MB in all), Starter 25 (25 MB), Pro 100 (100 MB) and Business 300 (250 MB).

What else it can read

PDFs are a good start. Most teams add a few other sources too.

Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Plus CSV, text and their OpenDocument versions, tables included.

Your website

Add your address and it reads your pages, FAQs and tables.

Google Drive folders

On Pro and Business, choose the folders each agent may read.

Ask in plain words

People ask the way they talk; the agent finds the right passages.

Share with your team

Colleagues ask it in the team chat.

Put it on your website

One snippet, and visitors can ask it too.

How to set it up

Train a chatbot on your PDFs

  1. 1

    Create an agent

Sign up, create an agent and give it a name and a short job description.

  2. 2

    Upload your PDFs

Add the files in the agent's Knowledge tab.

  3. 3

    Test the answers

Ask five questions people really ask in Test agent, and fix any file that gives a wrong answer.

  4. 4

    Share it

With your team, as a link, or on your website.

Before you share it

  1. 1Every PDF has text you can select, not just a scan.
  2. 2Old versions are removed.
  3. 3It answers your five most common questions correctly.
  4. 4It says what to do when the answer isn't in the files.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I chat with a PDF for free?

Will the chatbot make things up if the answer isn't in my PDFs?

Tell it in the agent's instructions what to do when the files don't say, such as pointing to your contact page. Test with questions your files don't answer before you share it.

Can visitors on my website ask it?

Yes. Put the agent on your site with one snippet, or with our WordPress plugin. Visitors don't need an account.

Are my PDFs used to train the AI for others?
